Insulation class (IP codes)
Die insulation classes are used to indicate the level of protection of electrical products from external loads caused by accidental contact, humidity or dust. The insulation class is indicated by 2 digits.
Level of protection from accidental contact and foreign matter (1st digit)
Digit | Protection from accidental contact | Protection from foreign matter |
---|---|---|
0 | no protection | no protection |
1 | Protection from large body parts of 50 mm diameter | large foreign objects (diameter 50 mm or more) |
2 | Finger protection (diameter 12 mm) | medium-size foreign objects (diameter 12.5 mm or more, length up to 80 mm) |
3 | Tools and wires (diameter 2.5 mm or more) | small foreign objects (diameter 2.5 mm or more) |
4 | Tools and wires (diameter 1 mm or more) | granular foreign objects (diameter 1 mm or more) |
5(K) | Wire protection (as IP 4) dustproof | Dust deposits |
6(K) | Wire protection (as IP 4) dustproof | no dust ingress |
Level of waterproofing (2nd digit)
Digit | Protection from water penetration |
